A Practical Preparation Sequence You Can Reuse
Treat CV writing as a production line, not a one-off burst of inspiration.
- Lock the target roles and collect three live ads.
- Write a four-to-six-line professional profile that names the role family and your strongest proof, not a personality paragraph.
- List six to ten skills that appear in those ads. Mix tools and behaviours only if the ads mention both.
- Rebuild each recent role as achievement bullets. Lead with a verb, add the context, finish with the result. “Responsible for stock” is a duty. “Cut stock-loss by 18% across two stores in 12 months” is evidence.
- Put education after experience unless you are a recent graduate or the qualification is the main entry ticket (teaching, nursing, accounting).
- Add only extra sections that help the target role: practising certificates, first aid, forklift, languages, iwi affiliations where relevant to the employer, or community work that shows leadership.
- Save a master file in Word. Export a PDF named FirstName-LastName-CV.pdf for each application.

Tailor Without Rewriting From Scratch

Keep the master. For each application, change only:

- The skills list order
- Two or three bullets in the most recent roles so they echo the advert’s language honestly
- The cover letter’s first paragraph
If you cannot find a truthful match for a required skill, do not invent it. Apply to a better-fit role instead. Fewer, closer applications outperform a high volume of near-misses.
